Baby Hat Business is Booming for a local Grandmother
Date 15th May: Local Leamington Spa company, Baby No Bumps, could be crowned a winner in the first national Nectar Business Small Business Awards.
Susan Port entered the company she set up three years ago, into the Small Business of The Year category, and is now in with a chance to make it to the awards shortlist and scoop the final prize!
Baby No Bumps sells protective hats, designed to protect babies from serious bumps to the head while they are learning to sit up, crawl and walk.
Susan’s inspiration for the business came after she noticed a bump on her granddaughter’s head. As a concerned grandmother, she tried to find a product to help protect her granddaughter from head injuries. After much searching on the high street and online, Susan was not able to find any such product and even tried to design one herself. She then happened across a Canadian company on the Internet, which produces safety hats, exactly what she was needed.
Many months of negotiation followed, whilst Susan tried to secure the license to distribute the safety hats throughout the UK and EU. This was achieved in 2006 and Baby No Bumps was born. Since that date the company has been selling brightly coloured and patterned safety hats to concerned parents nationwide via its website and telephone orders. Mothercare has even expressed an interest in distributing the hats, which would massively increase sales.
Susan comments; “I’m immensely proud of Baby No Bumps. With very little funding and without any grants, I have managed to bring a product to the UK, which will improve child safety. Three years on, the business is now performing exceptionally well, and with more and more parents looking for ways to protect their children from serious harm, I can only see the business growing.”
Susan continues; “I intend to make Baby No Bumps a brand name that is not only widely recognisable, but also the first choice for new parents.”
Baby No Bumps is just one of many hugely successful and dedicated small UK enterprises that have entered the Nectar Business Small Business Awards. The awards have been set up to acknowledge and celebrate the successes and achievements of small and medium sized businesses all over the country. The awards are open until 18th May and three winning entrants, announced in July, will receive not only the recognition they deserve for all their hard work, but also £2,000 and 50,000 Nectar points.
Charlie Humphreys, Head of Nectar Business which has founded the awards says: “Everyone who runs a small business, especially in the current climate, has to work extremely hard to get it off the ground and make a success of it. These awards represent a fantastic opportunity to celebrate great business ideas, business practice and great people. I would like to wish everyone who enters the best of luck!”
